25 Faces Manipulated on Competence, Controlling for Attractiveness (Orthogonal Model))
Twenty-five maximally distinct male identities were created using FaceGen Modeller program (http://facegen.com) Version 3.1. We varied each facial identity along the dimension of that was made to manipulate perceived competence of the facial identity in a manner that was orthogonal to perceived attractiveness from the models of these created in Oosterhof & Todorov (2008) and Todorov & Oosterhof 2011on both shape and reflectance.
The description of how this “orthogonal” model was created can be found in Oh et al. 2019, and a description of validation of the initial competence and attractiveness models is available in Todorov et al. (2013).
Using the model, each identity was manipulated to create seven versions (-3 SD, -2 SD, -1 SD, 0 SD, 1 SD, 2 SD, and 3 SD) on competence (orthogonal to attractiveness). A detailed description of the generation of these stimuli and the validation of this model is available in Oh et al. 2019.
